Jackson-Pratt™ 3-Spring Reservoir Kit Recall Attorneys
Did You Suffer an Infection While Using a JP Reservoir?
Jackson-Pratt (or JP) is one of the most popular manufacturers of wound drain kits and similar medical equipment. The company recently announced that it would work with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to voluntarily recall its 3-Spring Reservoir kit due to inadequate sterilization, which could increase the risk of post-operative or surgical site infection.
If you suffered a wound-related infection and had been treated with a JP 3-Spring Reservoir kit at any point in your recovery, either in the hospital or through in-home aftercare instructions, Crane Flores, LLP wants to hear from you. Our defective product attorneys are currently investigating the situation, hearing from patients who have been affected, and determining how legal action can be used to pursue justice and compensation. We have a main office in Oxnard, California, but we offer our legal counsel to people throughout the region.

What is the JP 3-Spring Reservoir Kit?
The Jackson-Pratt 3-Spring Reservoir kit is a piece of medical equipment used to drain patient wounds. It is most often used after surgery or an operation, but it can be applied to nonsurgical wounds in certain situations. In many cases, the wound drain reservoir kit is used while a patient is still hospitalized, but a patient can also be instructed to use the medical equipment at home during routine aftercare.
Why Was the JP 3-Spring Reservoir Kit Recalled?
In March 2024, Jackson-Pratt announced it would voluntarily recall a specific lot of its 3-Spring Reservoir kit products for sterilization concerns. Based on the limited information released by the manufacturer, a lot or batch of the products were packed and shipped before going through the sterilization process. If one of the affected products is used by a medical provider or patient, it is highly likely that it would result in a post-operative wound infection, which could cause severe or life-threatening complications.
JP products that have been slated for recall due to sterilization risks include:
- Jackson-Pratt™ 3-Spring Reservoir Kit with PVC Round Drain, 400mL, 7Fr/10Fr/15Fr
- Jackson-Pratt™ Universal Connector PVC Tubing Anti Reflux Transparent Y
- Jackson-Pratt™ 3-Spring Reservoir with Silicone Adapters, 400mL
Not sure if you have a recalled JP medical product, or if one was used during your hospitalization? Your medical provider and/or medical record should have detailed information about all medical instruments used during your treatment.
Post-Operative Wound Infection Risks
The risk of a post-operative wound infection will increase significantly if the wound is not treated with sterilized medical equipment. For this reason, the use of a recalled and unsterilized JP 3-Spring Reservoir kit should be considered highly dangerous and avoided.
Symptoms or warning signs of a post-operative wound infection often include:
- High fever and chills
- Redness and swelling around the wound
- Excessive bleeding from the wound
- Pus or discolored discharge from the wound
- Nausea, vomiting, or dizziness
- Dehydration or full-body weakness
If a post-operative infection is not treated quickly, the infection may worsen and could cause sepsis or an infection of the blood. Sepsis is usually life-threatening and may result in organ failure, shock, or death. If you are experiencing any symptoms of a post-operative wound infection, please see a medical provider immediately.
Is Jackson-Pratt Liable?
Strict product liability laws typically apply for medical products and instruments, such as the Jackson-Pratt 3-Spring Reservoir kit for wound draining and aftercare. If you suffered a post-operative infection due to the use of an unsterilized 3-Spring Reservoir kit, you might be able to file a claim against JP for selling an unsafe medical product, even though it was reportedly limited to just one lot of those products. Our defective product lawyers would be honored to research your situation for you to see what legal action you can take and what compensation might be available to you.
If you have a valid claim against JP for selling an unsafe 3-Spring Reservoir kit, you might be able to pursue compensation for:
- Past and future medical treatment costs
- Past and future lost wages
- Pain and suffering
