Home is where we all feel safest, but all it takes is one wrong move to upend that sense of security. On the eve of Election Day, it was reported that a pickup truck crashed into an Oxnard apartment building, leaving 40 people displaced and 3 in critical condition. The VC Star states the accident occurred around 4:27PM. Among the injured victims in critical condition were a 2 ½-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, who were found underneath the vehicle. The driver was also in critical condition. The children were rescued by bystanders while waiting for the police to arrive at the scene.
The little girl was in stable condition at the hospital, but the young boy had to be “airlifted to another hospital for further procedures.” There were several other members in the apartment affected by the accident, including a 16-year-old with minor injuries and a pregnant woman who needed to be taken to the hospital after hyperventilating.
Bystander Ramon Lugo, who heard the crash, commented, “Car crashes happen all the time here because of the signal light [on Oxnard Boulevard]. When I heard the sirens, that’s what I thought it was at first.” It requires extra caution around areas and intersections infamous for crashes.
The pickup truck destroyed two apartments, and a gas leak restricted residents from returning to those buildings. The Red Cross is thankfully providing a place to stay for the victims as well as funding for those affected by the accident.
Because car accidents commonly take place on the road, we can forget that vehicles have the power to harm much more than cars and their drivers.
